MLC announces a significant opportunity for stakeholders in the livestock industry to contribute to shaping the future of meat quality standards and market transparency. Defra and the Welsh Government have launched a consultation open for six weeks, closing on 13th March, focusing on proposals for a mandatory carcase classification and deadweight price reporting scheme for the sheep sector. Additionally, the consultation seeks views on mechanisms for authorising automated grading methods in abattoirs slaughtering beef and sheep in England and Wales.

Key Areas of Consultation

  • Mandatory Carcase Classification for Sheep: Proposals aim to standardise carcase classification across the sector, ensuring consistency and fairness in pricing.

  • Deadweight Price Reporting Scheme: The initiative seeks to enhance market transparency, providing all stakeholders with accurate and timely pricing information.

  • Automated Grading Methods: Exploring the authorisation of innovative technologies for carcase classification, potentially increasing efficiency and accuracy in meat processing.
