Woburn Country Foods
Farmer Andrew Davies and his daughter, Helen, have been successfully selling pork and products from a small facility near Woburn. Their high quality home produced bacon and sausages became an instant success and they soon outgrew the existing premises. As an ex pig producer Andrew had worked with the British Pig Executive so he came to the Meat & Livestock Commercial Services Limited for help with his new larger premises.
MLCSL visited two possible locations and advised on the merits and problems with each site. The old grain store on the farm was chosen as the best option and MLCSL produced some possible layout options for discussion with Andrew and Helen. MLCSL arranged meetings with the Food Standards Agency Veterinary Meat Hygiene Advisor to discuss the proposals and to ensure there would not be any surprises when the application was made for licensing.
The plant is now operational and has just been granted its full operating license. The new plant provides space for the business to grow and the integral farm shop provides a local outlet for local produce. The farm setting and ample parking makes the visit a pleasant experience and sales continue to increase as the word is spread around the surrounding town and villages.
The building programme didn’t stop their product development plans and Woburn Country Foods was awarded the “Best Speciality Cured Bacon” in the British Connoisseur Bacon Awards 2009. Their dry cured Woburn Black Bacon. beat over 250 products from 91 specialist bacon producers to win the award.

Andrew was full of praise for the MLCSL team, “They listened to our ideas and helped us develop a plant layout tailored to our needs. They didn’t try to give us a standard, one design fits all layout. We have a design that suits our process that will cater for all our needs as the business continues to develop ”.
